For one week in January, BMHS seniors shadow a professional in an area they have interest in pursuing. Seniors "work" a 30-40 hour week in lieu of taking midterms. Students begin the process during the summer between Junior and Senior year. They conduct interviews, do research on their mentor and their career, set up schedules, and write multiple papers about the various steps in the process.Half of Dylan's senior interim project is shadowing a critical care anesthesiologist that we know. The second half is shadowing an orthopaedic P.A.
On his first day, Dylan observed open heart surgery for over 5 hours. Dylan had so much to talk about afterwards! He detailed the bypass procedure, the pig valves, and how long each step took. He was lucky enough to meet the patient and their family beforehand and was fascinated by the whole process. At one point, he was even mistaken for a med student, which he thought was GREAT since people usually think is is much younger than 18.
You know, it was during Kevin's senior shadowing project in 2009 that he decided exactly what he is pursuing as a career. It's pretty wonderful for everyone concerned when that happens.
I love this senior project, and I'm so thankful for the awesome professionals that take our kids under their wing, and share their world for a week.
My momma' gratitude is simply overflowing.
